2023 “I Voted!” sticker contest F.A.Q.

Find answers to frequently asked questions about San Francisco’s official “I Voted!” sticker design contest.

1. Who can enter this contest? 

All adult San Francisco residents and college students are eligible to enter this contest, with the exception of employees and officers of the City and County of San Francisco. Every entrant will need to declare their eligibility with their submission and, in order to win any prize, a contest finalist will also need to verify their eligibility. Please note that poll workers are volunteers, not City employees, and they may enter this contest. 

2. What is the contest schedule? 

  • Submission Period - 8 a.m., August 21, 2023 to 11:59 p.m. September 22, 2023 (PT) 

  • Panel Review Period - September 28, 2023 to October 7, 2023 

  • Public Selection Period - October 10, 2023 to October 17, 2023 

  • Prize Announcements - October 26, 2023 at 10:00 am

3. How much are the cash prizes?  

$1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $300 for third place.  

4. How can I submit my design? 

You can submit your design between August 21, 2023 and September 22, 2023 in one of several ways:  

  1. Submit your design online through the submission portal. 

  1. Email your design to sticker.contest@sfgov.org, along with a completed submission form. 

  1. Mail* or bring your design to the Department of Elections, along with a completed submission form. Our address is 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 48, San Francisco, CA 94102. 

* Mailed submissions with a postmark of September 22, 2023 will be accepted as long as they are received before September 27.  

5. Is there a sticker design template?  

Yes, all entries must be designed using the Department’s mandatory circular sticker design template. You can use any colors to create your design submission, but you cannot alter or remove the translated text.  

6. Are there any other design rules? 

Yes. All sticker design submissions must follow these guidelines: 

  • Must include the words “I Voted” 

  • Must be unique and relate to San Francisco 

  • Must be original artwork (no stock photos or borrowed images) 

  • Must be politically neutral (cannot refer to any campaigns or issues)  

  • Must not include copyrighted, trademarked, or branded materials 

  • Must not include obscene, violent, or defamatory images or words  

  • Must not include any dates or years 

7.  What does the current “I Voted!” sticker look like?

8. Can I submit more than one design?

Yes, you may submit as many designs as you’d like.

9. Can I add more translated languages to my design?

Yes, you may add as many “I Voted!” translations as you’d like, as long as you maintain the Chinese, Spanish, and Filipino translations as well as “San Francisco Elections” in the border of the required Template.

10. Do I need to hand-draw my sticker design? 

No. Designs may also be created digitally using graphic design software such as InDesign, Illustrator, or Photoshop (digitally created submissions must be vector files or high-resolution JPEG images). 

11. Can I submit a non-circular design? 

No. Your design must conform to the Department’s mandatory circular design template. Any winning design will need to fit into a circle about 2 inches in diameter (a design can be enlarged or reduced to fit).  

12. Will I get my artwork back after I submit it to the Department of Elections? 

No. Due to the large number of submissions we expect to receive, we will not return artwork. All artwork submitted for this contest will become the property of the Department of Elections. 

13. Who can participate in the selection of the winning design? 

From October 10 through October 17, 2023, any San Francisco resident is eligible to select their favorite design or choose to keep the current sticker design. The selection can be done online or by visiting our office at City Hall, Room 48 during the selection period. The link to select your favorite sticker will be posted on our website on October 10, 2023.
