Types of Shared Spaces

There are 4 types of public spaces you may use as a Shared Space.

Each type of Shared Space will have different fees and requires a specific permit. You will apply for all the permits together in one application.

Check the types of use so you can understand your fees, prepare your site plan, and gather the info you need to apply.

Sidewalk

You can use the sidewalk in 3 ways:

  • Café tables and chairs
  • Display merchandise
  • Activations such as arts and culture events

The curbside lane is the street space next to the curb. This is often the parking lane.

This is a fixed structure or deck that is always open to the public. It is not for exclusive commercial activity.

Fixed commercial parklet

This is a fixed structure or deck used during business hours.

Your parklet must be open to the public during daytime hours, even if your business is closed.

Movable commercial parklet

A movable commercial parklet is used during specific business hours. If you apply for a movable parklet, you have to choose from our time blocks to use the space. You have to choose the same time blocks every day of the week.

The time blocks are:

  • 8 a.m. to Noon
  • Noon to 3 p.m.
  • 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

(You can choose up to 3 consecutive times. If you need the space all day, you must apply for a Fixed commercial parklet.)
