Apply for the Season of Sharing fund to get short-term help.

What to do

1. Check if you can apply

You can get help for situations like:

Housing Assistance:

  • Security deposits
  • First month rent
  • Delinquent rent or mortgage

Critical Needs:

  • Limited furniture items (bed frame and/or mattress, dining sets, dressers)
  • Limited medical equipment and health aids that are critical for maintaining a job, obtaining employment, continuing school, or helping seniors maintain independence
  • Utilities (delinquent) such at electricity, heating and water bills.
  • Non-routine auto repairs (restrictions apply)
  • Critical medical/dental costs

You are eligible to apply for the program if you are a San Francisco resident and meet at least one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Families with dependent children 18 years of age and under;
  • Persons who are age 55 and older;
  • Disabled Individuals;
  • Veterans;
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Emancipated foster youth between the ages of 18 and 24 (only eligible for housing assistance);
  • Survivors of intimate partner violence (occurred within the last year of application)

Additional program information:

  • You may qualify to receive Season of Sharing funds once every five years.
  • Applicants are screened prior to receiving Season of Sharing funds to ensure eligibility, and funding is not guaranteed.
  • Applicant must demonstrate the use of Season of Sharing funds will resolve the immediate problem, and the family or individual will regain long-term self-sufficiency after receiving Season of Sharing funds.
  • Any approved grant will be paid directly to the supplier of services: landlord, utility company, furniture vendor, medical equipment provider etc.

2. Apply with referral organizations

Applicants may contact any of the Community Partners below for a pre-screening. If the applicant is eligible, the Community Partner will assist them in completing the intake process.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to gather all verification documents in order for the agency to submit the application to Season of Sharing. Any misrepresentation of circumstances, omission of financial information, or withholding of crucial information during this screening or intake processes will be basis for denial of the request of assistance.

Become a Season of Sharing Community Partner

Community-based organizations play an essential role in the San Francisco Season of Sharing program. The City provides caseworker training sessions to organizations interested in becoming a Season of Sharing Community Partner. Only agencies that have completed a mandatory orientation may submit applications on behalf of their clients.

Interested agencies should sign up for one of our Community Partner Trainings, offered virtually on a monthly basis.

About the fund

The Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund provides temporary assistance to help people living in Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties. In addition to Housing and Critical Family Needs assistance, the Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund provides support to Bay Area food banks to purchase food.
