What to do
If you need care today for an injury or illness that is not life-threatening, see how to get a same-day appointment.
1. Enroll in the San Francisco Health Network
Before you can see a specialist, you need to be a patient at a San Francisco Health Network clinic.
2. Ask your doctor for a referral
Talk with your assigned primary care doctor or clinic about seeing a specialist.
Your primary care doctor can:
- Discuss options with you
- Send an electronic consultation, or "e-consult," to get more information from a specialist on your behalf
- Submit a referral for you to see a specialist
To send a message to your clinic or make an appointment, use the MyChart patient portal.

Speciality care options
Some specialty appointments can happen at your regular clinic. But for most specialists, you will be given instructions to go to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital.
Ask the clinic or doctor who gave you the referral if you are not sure where to go.
