San Francisco, CA – In celebration of Valentine’s Day, Assessor-Recorder Joaquín Torres is pleased to share that love is alive and well in San Francisco, with over 9,600 marriages recorded in 2024.
“Every day, our office welcomes couples coming from near and far as they take the final step in completing their commitment to one another in this great city that will never stop fighting for the rights, dignity and safety of all people,” said Assessor-Recorder Joaquín Torres. “With celebrations in City Hall, throughout our neighborhoods, at our local restaurants, arts and entertainment institutions, on Valentine’s Day we are reminded that San Francisco stands proudly as a vibrant city of hope, inclusivity and love for diverse communities here at home and across the world.”
2024 saw an increase in publicly recorded marriages over the prior year, following significant decreases during the height of the pandemic. Public marriages in San Francisco throughout the last 6 years:
- 2024: 9,602
- 2023: 9,162
- 2022: 8,316
- 2021: 4,403
- 2020: 3,819
- 2019: 10,507
To complete your public marriage in San Francisco and get your official marriage certificate, you first have to record your completed license with the Office of the Assessor-Recorder. Couples need an official marriage certificate to prove their legal marriage, establish their identities and apply for benefits.
The Office of the Assessor-Recorder has taken steps in recent years to make this process easier, spearheading a program for newlyweds to get same-day copies of their official marriage certificate one hour after getting married and submitting their license. This service is part of a broader set of initiatives to enhance San Franciscans’ access to public recorded documents and information.
“As we enhance our processes and modernize our systems to better serve the public, I’m so proud that we’re able to make couples’ special day easier through providing the efficient, seamless and excellent service San Franciscans rely on and expect,” said Assessor-Recorder Joaquín Torres.
