Start (or end!) with drinks

Start or end your night at one of the area’s many watering holes. If you are feeling fancy, Charmaine’s, located on the roof of the Proper Hotel, is the spot, with sweeping views of the City and decor by renowned interior designer Kelly Wearstler. 

Rise Over Run adds music to their mixed drinks with regular DJ sets, bands and an only-in-SF-kind-of-experience “sound bath.” 

For beer-lovers, try the Fermentation Lab

If alcohol isn’t your jam, pay a visit to Mo Greens dispensary.  

Take in the sights

Take a stroll through the Civic Center commons where you will encounter a few visual delights.

At UN Plaza, check out SF’s local skater community in action and marvel at the infinite combination of colored lights in Charles Gadeken’s light installation, Entwined

Wander through Fulton Street Plaza with its two giant koi fish painted by Jeremy Novy and the historic Pioneer Monument. 

Explore Middle Ground an interactive installation by the Exploratorium located on the steps of the Main Library. 

Take in the majestic City Hall, which is often awash in colored lights to mark special anniversaries and holidays. 

Located on the Polk Street-side of the Bill Graham Auditorium is a neon artwork by Joseph Kosuth titled W.F.T. (San Francisco) that is an illuminated tree tracing the origins of the words “civic” and “auditorium”.  

Have dinner

After all of this exploring and walking, it might be good to grab some dinner. Civic Center and Mid-Market offer a variety of dining options at different price points, from affordable and tasty eateries to more casual restaurants with innovative menus. Wherever you are in Civic Center and Mid-Market, you’ll find something to satisfy your cravings. Plus, the vibrant atmosphere in these neighborhoods makes for great people watching as you unwind and reflect on your adventurous night out.  

Affordable and Tasty 

Gyro King Greek fast-food restaurant offering a tasty selection of Mediterranean dishes.  

Sam’s American Eatery serves up homemade high quality comfort food with fresh organic ingredients and a flavorful experience. 

Saluhall is a vibrant food hall featuring five Bay Area restaurateurs, an in-house bakery, burger bar, soft serve, and three full-service bars.   

Casual 

Turkuaz, a new Turkish spot at the corner of Mission and 8th streets.

Montesacro, located on historic Stevenson Street with murals and night lanterns, Montesacro is the first Pinseria Romana in the US, brining a slice of authentic Italian culture to the Mid Market area  

Cadillac Bar and Grill, situated near Market and 9th streets, this spot specializes in flavorful Tex-Mex cuisine.   

Nearby on Market at 9th St, Nepalese Indian Cuisine brings authentic cuisine of both Nepal and India to the area.

Visual art

The Asian Art Museum, the world’s leading museum dedicated to connecting global audiences with Asian and Asian American art and culture, is open late on Thursdays until 8 p.m.  

Comedy

The Function Comedy Club & Cocktail Bar is a Black-owned club that presents top talent in an eclectic atmosphere.  

Dance

San Francisco Ballet is one of the world’s premiere dance companies. 

Music

Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and The Warfield present current headline bands and chart toppers.  

Davies Symphony Hall is home to the world-renowned SF Symphony. 

War Memorial Opera House is home to the SF Opera.  

For Jazz lovers try,  SF Jazz and Mr. Tipple’s Recording Studio.  

Uccello Lounge, features the students and alumni of the adjacent San Francisco Conservatory of Music as well as a robust calendar of concerts at their new Bowes Center

Getting there

Mid Market and Civic Center is located along the major transit artery in San Francisco. It is widely and easily accessible via BART (Civic Center Station), Muni (Van Ness or Civic Center stations), and dozens of bus lines.
