Design your Roadway Shared Space

Follow our guidelines to design your Roadway Shared Space.

Where you can use the street

You can ask for one or more blocks to be closed to traffic and opened for people and business. Partial closures of some traffic lanes, not the full street, may be possible in some locations.

  • We prefer to close streets that are:
  • No public transit or bike lanes
  • No driveways or alleys
  • Low traffic volumes and slow speeds
  • No fire or police stations, medical facilities, or similar facilities

Decide on the activities for your street closure

We allow these activities in street space:

  • Informal gathering
  • Outdoor recreation
  • Entertainment and cultural activities
  • Seating for cafes and restaurants
  • Retail display or sales
  • Services

See the Shared Spaces manual for design guidelines

Check our guidelines in the Shared Spaces manual in the Roadway section.

Overhead objects

All hanging or overhead objects, like umbrellas or canopies, must be at least 7 feet from the ground.

The base of an overhead object, like an umbrella, cannot extend beyond the diverters.
