The parking lane is the space on the road closest to the curb.
Types of parking lane Shared Spaces
There are 3 types of parking lane Shared Spaces:
- Public parklet
- Fixed commercial parklet
- Commercial parklet

If you are applying to use the sidewalk too, you must also follow the sidewalk Shared Spaces rules.
Where you can use the parking lane
You cannot build a parklet or use the parking lane if you have:
- Red or blue curb
- A bus stop or transit shelter
With a parking lane Shared Spaces permit, you may use the parking lane in front of your business or organization.
You may need your neighbor’s permission to use space in front of their business.
You can use up to 2 parking spaces.
Corners
You cannot use space near corners. Your space must be 20 feet from an approach intersection and 8 feet from an exiting intersection.
Fire hydrants
You cannot build fixed structures in the red curbside lane by a fire hydrant.
Do not build or mark on the sidewalk
Your parking lane structure must end at sidewalk. You cannot fix a structure to the sidewalk except for thresholds or accessible ramps.
Include your thresholds or ramps on your site plan. We must review and approve it.
You cannot put stickers or spray paint on the sidewalk, except for social distancing markings.
3-foot emergency access gap
For safety, you must have a minimum 3-foot emergency access gap for every 20 feet. The gap must be open to the sky.
Bus stop zones
You cannot put anything in a bus stop zone or within 10 feet of a bus shelter.
City infrastructure
See the Shared Spaces manual for parking lanes with:
- Bike lane, bike share stations, bike racks or bike corral
- Yellow, green, or white curbs
- Taxi zones or commuter stops
