What to do
EV charging providers can apply to take part in the Pilot Program. Successful applicants may be permitted to install, own, and operate charging infrastructure in the public right-of-way during a limited Pilot term.
We are seeking projects that can:
- Get permitted and installed quickly
- Showcase different technologies and business models
- Provide access to convenient and affordable charging to San Francisco residents without access to at-home charging
- Help gather insights and data over an anticipated 1 to 2 year Pilot term on publicly accessible EV charging for future program and policy development
It is free to apply to the Program, but permit fees and other requirements may vary.
We plan to review applications on a rolling basis between August and December 2024.
1. Check if you are eligible
Your site must be:
- Within the DPW right-of-way
- Adjacent to the curb (not floating)
- Non-commercial corridors
- Free of regulatory and emergency access conflicts
- Meet accessibility requirements
2. Apply to install a pilot curbside EV charger
We will ask you about:
- Yourself
- Property and utility info
- Site and location details
- Project description
You will receive a confirmation email after you submit your application.
3. Staff review
City staff will review your information and determine your project's eligibility.
We will notify you by email if you need to make changes to your proposed site and project plan before moving forward.
When your project aligns with City goals, you will move on to Step 4.
4. Show proof of permits and electric service
If your project is eligible and aligns with City goals, you will be invited to move forward in the Pilot Program. You must then obtain and provide proof of the following permits:
- San Francisco Public Works
- Department of Building Inspection
You must also obtain and provide proof of new electric service or agreement(s) with property owner(s) providing capacity behind-the-meter, indicating that the site will have sufficient power capacity for your project by the time of installation. Potential providers may include:
- San Francisco Public Utilities Commission
- Pacific Gas & Electric
5. Install your pilot curbside charging demonstration
Once our staff receives and approves your proof of permits, SFMTA will legislate the parking space at the curb for EV Charging. You may then begin installation.
6. Maintain your pilot curbside charging demonstration and share your data
As described in the Guidelines and defined by your Emerging Technology Permit, during the Pilot term, you must keep your pilot charging project:
- Safe
- Accessible
- Clean
- Operational
You must also continue to share data on charger utilization, uptime, and user feedback.
