Addressing Misinformation, Disinformation, and Malinformation

The San Francisco Department of Elections takes a proactive approach to addressing concerns about election mis-, dis-, and malinformation. Learn more about the strategies put in place to address these concerns.

Clear and Direct Communication

We prioritize publishing clear, easy-to-understand information on our website and in election materials, ensuring that all San Francisco registered voters are informed about key election dates, rules, operational changes, and other important details. Voters can also visit the Department’s website, subscribe to our email newsletter, and follow our social media accounts to get trusted information about upcoming elections.

The Department also conducts robust, multilingual, outreach through notices, press releases, social media channels, and live presentations, and actively participates in community events to engage with residents and outreach partners. (See our outreach calendar)

Monitoring and Response Protocol

The Department has established internal protocols to monitor, evaluate, document, and respond to incidents involving mis-, dis-, and malinformation across various platforms. These include social media, print media, audio sources, and digital media.

We diligently monitor public platforms and promptly respond to false information with official, verified facts.

Safeguards against Artificial Intelligence in Local Elections

The Department’s May 2024 memorandum to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors (Rules Committee) on artificial intelligence in local elections provides a summary of the safeguards implemented and under consideration to enhance election security.

These measures address both AI-related risks and the overall integrity of the election process and voting system. The memorandum covers five key areas:

  1. Collaboration with State, Federal, and Local Agencies
  2. Information and Evaluation Response Protocols
  3. Providing Accurate and Trusted Election Information
  4. Expanded Social Media Guidelines and Topical Messaging
  5. Election Technology Security Protocols
