Taraval Improvement Project small business grant for Segment B

What to know
This program was for:
Some businesses located along Taraval St. from Sunset Blvd. through the intersection of 15th Ave. that were disrupted by the SFMTA L Taraval Improvement Project Segment B (which started in January 2022) may have been eligible for a reimbursement grant for business operating expenses.
Grant amount:
Up to $5,000: Storefront locations opened before 2023
Up to $2,500: Storefront locations opened in 2023
If awarded, grant awards are taxable income. Self-Help for the Elderly will provide you a check on behalf of the City and County of San Francisco. They will also provide you a Form 1099.
Grants can reimburse for the following operational expenses:
Employee wages, rent, utilities, and/or vendor and inventory expenses
Application timeline:
June 3, 2024: Applications open
July 2, 2024 at 5:00 PM: Applications due

Who is the grant for?
This grant is by invitation only, to potentially eligible businesses along the specified blocks of Taraval St.
We will reach out to businesses within the impacted area directly by email, phone, and in-person outreach through out partnership with Self-Help for the Elderly. The invitation will include a direct link to apply online.
If you think you are eligible but haven't received information by email on June 10th, you can email sfosb@sfgov.org and we will assist you.
Technical assistance is available in multiple languages.
Who is eligible?
For this grant, we will consider businesses that were disrupted by Muni track replacement, sewage, and utility work along Taraval St. that started in January 2022.
Your business:
- Must be located:
- Taraval Street, between Sunset Blvd. through the intersection of 15th Ave. This is within the Segment B impact zone of the SFMTA L-Taraval Improvement project.
- Primary public entrance to the storefront must be directly facing the area of disruption
- Experienced disruption to normal business operations due to the construction impacts of the L-Taraval Improvement Project
- Must be registered in San Francisco
- Must have $5 million or less in gross revenue
- Must have an average of 100 or fewer employees
- Must have opened to the public before December 31, 2023
- Must be currently in operation from a ground floor physical commercial location, selling goods and/or services to the public from that location. For example:
- A restaurant, café, retail shop, gallery, salon, dental office, childcare center, or similar is eligible
- Private offices are not eligible. Offices that serve the public are eligible (e.g. dentist, travel agency)
- Businesses with 11 or more locations worldwide (formula retail) are not eligible
- Independently owned franchises are eligible
- Nonprofits are only eligible if:
- The location lost revenue during the L Taraval Improvement Project.
- For example, a non-profit that sells tickets to the public to visit its location is eligible.
- They are current with the Registry of Charitable Trusts
- The location lost revenue during the L Taraval Improvement Project.
Businesses not eligible:
- Mobile businesses
- Real estate and property management businesses
- Businesses located on the 2nd floor or higher
- A non-profit that doesn’t generate earn revenue from their Taraval-area location
- Home-based businesses
- This includes the management of residential rental properties

The Taraval Improvement Project small business grant is a one-time program that was approved by the Board of Supervisors after advocacy from elected officials, community, and business leaders.
This is one-time only and not an ongoing grant program administered by the Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD).
Submission of an application does not guarantee funding. Funding will be determined in the City’s sole discretion.
