A normal pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks. Babies born before 37 weeks of pregnancy are called preterm or premature. Babies born before 32 weeks of pregnancy are considered very preterm. Babies before 28 weeks of pregnancy are considered extremely preterm. The earlier a baby is born, the less likely the baby is to survive. Those who do survive often have serious, sometimes long-term, health problems and disabilities.
