BACKGROUND:
After a nearly year-long nationwide search, the Sheriff’s Department Oversight Board (SDOB) will announce its first ever Inspector General. SDOB was established in November 2020, under voter-approved Proposition D in an amendment to the San Francisco Charter.

SDOB’s seven members were fully seated in December 2021, with three members appointed by Mayor London Breed and four members appointed by the Board of Supervisors. SDOB’s members underwent required training and orientation on custodial law enforcement, constitutional policing, and policies and procedures of the San Francisco Sheriff’s Office (SFSO). SDOB has the authority to appoint an Inspector General to head the SFSO Office of Inspector General (OIG), also known as Sheriff’s Department of Accountability. OIG is independent of the Sheriff’s Office and among its duties will receive and review complaints against SFSO employees and contractors. It will also make recommendations to the sheriff on disciplinary actions and develop and recommend a use of force policy and comprehensive internal review process for all use of force and critical incidents.
