DBI Update – New Hours and 4/23 PermitSF Customer Forum

Dear Customers,

The Department of Building Inspection (DBI), the Permit Center, and our partner permitting departments across the City are shifting our hours of operation to better serve you.

In reviewing when customers are showing up, we found a clear trend: fewer customers early in the morning, and more activity later in the day. So we’re aligning our hours with that demand and moving our training days so we can remain open and fully staffed until 5pm every week day.

Starting Monday, April 28, the new hours for the Permit Center, Plan review counters, the Central Permit Bureau (permit processing), Records Management (3R reports and other building records), and Inspection Services’ 4th floor counters will be:

  • Monday: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm
  • Tuesday through Friday: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm

To give each customer and plan checker adequate time to review a project, Plan Review and Print Center queues will close at 4:30pm. Payments will be accepted and permits will be issued until 5:00pm.

We’re also excited to announce a new chapter in how we connect with you. What was previously known as the Public Advisory Forum is now the PermitSF Customer Forum, a name that reflects the City’s focus on transparency, improvement, and collaboration through the PermitSF initiative - our inter-departmental effort to modernize and streamline how permits are reviewed, issued, and managed across City departments.

At the online forum, we’ll discuss PermitSF, the updated building permit and application report, the upcoming Concrete Building Safety Program, and the work of the newly established DBI Code Streamlining Committee.

The forum remains a space for us to share important updates, hear your feedback, and answer questions about the City’s permitting process. It’s also an opportunity to highlight improvements being introduced through PermitSF and track the progress of that initiative. Join us!
