Radiological Concerns
At the Shipyard, the Navy is actively searching for and removing radiological contamination. Some radiation-containing objects, such as deck markers, have been found at the Shipyard. Review the Navy’s fact sheet about their recent discovery of a radiological object in Parcel C at the Shipyard.
REPORT CONCERNS ABOUT SUSPECTED RADIOLOGICAL OBJECTS
If you see an object at the Shipyard that you suspect might be radiological (such as a deck marker), do not touch it. Instead, you can:
- Report the object to the Navy by leaving a message on the Shipyard Information Line at (415) 295-4742.
- File a hazardous waste complaint with the Department of Toxic Substance Control by calling (800) 728-6942.
Closed to the Public
Areas of the Shipyard where ongoing cleanup activities are occurring, and where potential radiological objects may be present, are closed to the public. As a result, these objects are not believed to pose a threat to public health and safety.
If you have questions concerning radiation at the Shipyard, you can contact the Navy's radiological health and safety expert, Dr. Kathryn Higly by phone at (541) 737-0675 or via email at kathryn.higley@oregonstate.edu.
Stay out of closed areas of the Shipyard. Follow all posted signage concerning accessible and non-accessible areas.
