Hunters Point Naval Shipyard - Dust & Air Quality

Learn how the Navy manages dust and monitors air quality

Legacy of Industry

The Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood has long been a hub for industrial activity, leading to one of the highest concentrations of industrial uses in San Francisco. Past industrial uses, including at the Shipyard, and ongoing industrial activities have contributed to soil and water contamination, air pollution, and vehicle emissions. In response to these conditions, SFDPH continues to work towards reducing pollution in the area.

Managing Dust

During the cleanup process at the Shipyard, the Navy excavates soil and demolishes buildings, which generates dust. To limit airborne dust, the Navy applies water to disturbed areas, covers exposed soil, and monitors dust levels and wind conditions. These measures help protect public health and minimize environmental impacts. Learn more about the Navy's approach to dust control.

Monitoring Air Quality

The Navy is required to monitor the air at the Shipyard to check for the presence of harmful substances like lead, asbestos, and methane. Air monitoring data is reviewed by state and federal regulatory agencies to help ensure that cleanup activities do not pose additional health risks to the community. Review the Navy's air monitoring activities.
