What to do

The County Clerk's office handles certified copies of San Francisco confidential marriage certificates. If you had a public marriage, get a copy of your marriage certificate from the Office of the Assessor-Recorder.

1. Wait 4 weeks after the license has been returned for registration

You may get a certified copy of your confidential marriage certificate 4 weeks after your license has been returned for registration. It will not be available before then.

Go to the Office of the County Clerk

You can apply for a copy of a Confidential Marriage Certificate if you are one of the two parties on the certificate.

Complete an application.

Go the the Office of the County Clerk.

The person applying must bring an unexpired government-issued photo ID.

Pay the current fee. You can pay by cash or credit card. You can also pay with a personal check, money order, or cashier's check, from a US bank and in US dollars.

Fill out the confidential marriage certificate application form.

Sign the Sworn Statement before a Notary Public and have your signature acknowledged. The Notary Public will provide a Certificate of Acknowledgment. 

Mail the application, certificate of acknowledgment, and payment to the Office of the County Clerk.

 

 

 

Note: Acknowledgments executed by Notaries Public outside of the US are not accepted. If you are outside of the US, a Sworn Statement must be taken before an Ambassador, Minister, Consul, Vice Consul, or Consular Agent of the United States or before any Judge of a Court of Record having a seal in the foreign country.
