CLI is a branch of the Population Health Division in the San Francisco Department of Public Health that works to promote a diverse and talented workforce and advance health equity. Our vision is to foster a culture of learning, trust, and innovation. We do that in a number of ways: from sharing information and resources to experimenting with new and innovative technologies, to training and coaching staff and partners, building partnerships across sectors, and mentoring emerging public health professionals. CLI offers technical assistance to branches within the Population Health Division and supports other health departments and community-based organizations in their workforce development efforts.

The Center for Learning & Innovation (CLI) provides assistance with the training and workforce development needs of the Population Health Division, and in special cases, other teams within the San Francisco Department of Public Health. To make a request, please complete this brief intake form and provide as much detail as possible. A CLI staff member will contact you after receiving your request. CLI leads and coordinates professional development activities across the Population Health Division and with community partners locally and nationally to ensure a competent public health workforce. CLI works with partners to create and host training opportunities for the public health workforce.

The San Francisco Department of Public Health’s CBA program provides free, customized, peer-to-peer Capacity Building Assistance in high-impact HIV prevention to health departments and community-based organizations in the West Region of the United States. We provide capacity building assistance through information dissemination, customized technical assistance (online and in-person), interactive Institutes and Learning Communities, peer-to-peer mentoring, site visits, evidence-based resources and toolkits, and state of the science webinars.

Pathway programs, with support from CLI, offer internships and fellowships that help students and recent graduates get ready for PHD jobs. These programs give hands-on experience, along with training, coaching, and mentoring from PHD professionals.
