Improving health in the Bayview-Hunters Point community
The San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is committed to taking an equitable approach to strengthening access to health resources and culturally responsive wellbeing supports that the Bayview-Hunters Point community needs to thrive.
We embrace our responsibility to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes. We offer services and build community partnerships that foster physical, behavioral, and environmental health.
Here's what we're doing
Providing access to health care and services
In the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood, residents can access SFDPH health services through:
- Southeast Family Health Center delivers full-service health services to people of all ages.
- 3rd Street Youth Center and Clinic provides primary care for youth, ages 12-24.
- DPH Street Care Teams respond to care needs of people experiencing homelessness and mental health or substance use challenges.
Supporting a healthier environment
Protecting the environmental health of the Bayview-Hunters Point community is a priority for SFDPH. The Hunters Point Naval Shipyard (HPNS), a former active U.S. Naval base, is undergoing a multi-year cleanup governed by federal law.
Alongside state and federal regulators, SFDPH monitors the Navy in every step of the cleanup, as part of our mission to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of all in San Francisco. Learn more about the Shipyard progress here.
Once land is clean, SFDPH requires developers to meet special requirements which are unique to the Shipyard, to provide an extra level of care and regulatory oversight to protect the Bayview-Hunters Point community.
Partnering with community-based organizations
We value the collective knowledge, resilience, and power of community. Our efforts to foster healthier communities are centered in community partnerships and relationships where we develop a shared vision for health outcomes and seek solutions together.
Promoting healthy eating, active living, and chronic disease prevention
We support programs in Bayview-Hunters Point that improve equitable access to healthy food, encourage physical activity, and prevent disease. Some of these programs include:
- Bayview Black Organic Farmers Program at the Florence Fang Community Farm provides fresh produce to families and farming land to Black/African American organic farmers.
- Fitness classes and activities with Fa’atasi Youth Services that promote physical activity in the Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander community.
- Tobacco cessation classes and support groups through the Tobacco Free Project to help people quit smoking and stop using tobacco products.
Creating safety from violence and trauma
Our street crises teams provide immediate care to people in behavioral health crisis and de-escalate disruptions to protect community members from harm and meet care needs.
The Street Crisis Response Team (SCRT) operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to provide rapid, trauma-informed care.
Improving behavioral health
Our culturally responsive behavioral health programming includes mental health, substance use, and wellbeing services in the Bayview-Hunters Point community.
