General hospital visits allowed under new health order

Hospitals must work with patients and screen visitors for any symptoms.
May 26, 2020

The Department of Public Health has released new conditions that allow hospital visitors, if providers have in place specific safety requirements.

Hospitals may allow patients to have 1 visitor in their room per day. There are other situations where you can be with someone in the hospital. Examples include going to the hospital with:

  • Someone who is under 18 years old
  • Someone who is developmentally disabled and needs assistance

The hospital may also let you visit if there is an urgent health, legal, or other issues that cannot wait.

Call the facility you want to visit before you leave. You should check your health before you go. You may need to get tested for COVID-19 beforehand. You will need to stay 6 feet apart from others at the hospital. You will also need to wear a face covering when you visit, although the hospital can give you one.

Hospitals need to follow certain health and safety rules

In general:

  • Work with patients (or if needed, their decision makers) about who can visit
  • Provide this Public Health Order to the public
  • Provide hand sanitizer for visitors
  • Require patients and staff to wear face coverings, or PPE if needed
  • Have patients, visitors, and staff follow physical distancing requirements
  • Have patients screen their health before and during the visit
  • Have workers screen their health daily
  • Report within 24 hours, if any workers test positive for COVID-19
  • Follow the Public Health directives, which contain a COVID-19 Plan
