Improving Health in the Community

The San Francisco Department of Public Health is committed to taking an equitable approach to healthcare and is working to improve access to culturally responsive resources that support the well-being of the Bayview-Hunters Point community. We strive to reduce health disparities and enhance health outcomes through services and partnerships that promote physical, behavioral, and environmental health.

Supporting a Healthier Environment

Protecting the environmental health of the Bayview-Hunters Point community is a priority for SFDPH. The Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, a former active U.S. Naval base, is undergoing a multi-year cleanup governed by federal law.

Alongside state and federal regulators, SFDPH monitors the Navy in every step of the cleanup, as part of our mission to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of all in San Francisco. Learn more about the ongoing cleanup at the Shipyard.

Once cleanup activities are complete, SFDPH requires developers to meet special requirements which are unique to the Shipyard, to provide an extra level of care and regulatory oversight to protect the Bayview-Hunters Point community. Learn more about the Article 31 program

Partnering with the Community

We value the collective knowledge, resilience, and power of community. Our efforts to foster healthier communities are centered in community partnerships and relationships where we develop a shared vision for health outcomes and seek solutions together.

Promoting Healthy Living

We support programs in the Bayview-Hunters Point that improve equitable access to healthy food, encourage physical activity, and prevent chronic disease. Some of these programs include:

  • Bayview Black Organic Farmers Program at the Florence Fang Community Farm provides fresh produce to families and farming land to Black/African American organic farmers.
  • Fitness classes and activities with Fa’atasi Youth Services that promote physical activity in the Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander community.
  • Tobacco cessation classes and support groups through the Tobacco Free Project to help people quit smoking and stop using tobacco products.

Addressing Violence and Trauma

The Street Crisis Response Team provides immediate care to people in behavioral health crisis and de-escalates disruptions to protect community members from harm and meet care needs. The SCRT operates 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, to provide rapid, trauma-informed care.
