Racial Equity Champions

DPH Staff can email Khari.Marshall@sfdph.org to receive more information about the Equity Champions program.

It is the policy of the San Francisco Department of Public Health to equip staff to help their individual work areas and sections meet the equity goals of the department:

1. Create an equity culture in DPH workplaces wherein racial differences between staff treatment are eliminated and staff have the opportunity to fully engage in their work

2. Make the elimination of racial health disparities a central and active priority within all areas of DPH.

To this end Equity Champions engage in trainings, program development, and other skill development to address health disparities and other inequities within our workforce and in our communities. They are in turn expected to provide advocacy, training, and consultation to their colleagues and leadership in their workspace to support their division, section/branch or unit equity goals.

Equity Champions are staff drawn from every major section of the department who have expressed interest and commitment to racial equity work. Equity Champions are given protected time for equity-focused learning and implementation of equity initiatives.

Equity Champion projects include:

  • Participation in equity teams, groups or councils
  • Developing equity competencies for their section and gathering relevant educational materials
  • Participating in Equity A3 development
  • Arrange logistics and facilitate Equity Learning Series Discussions, or other events
  • Suggesting articles for Equity Learning Series Discussion groups
  • Conducting equity trainings
  • Identifying potential speakers for the Equity Learning Series, Swartz Rounds or other venues
  • Promoting and planning equity events and recruiting participants
  • Conducting interviews or data collection with patients or community groups relevant to their unit equity focus
  • Active leadership or service on behalf of an affinity group
