Appeal to the Building Inspection Commission

Appeals to the Building Inspection Commission must be filed within 15 days of the issuance of a determination.

What to do

1. Complete the appeal application

Follow the instructions on the first page.

We will ask you for the following information:

  • The type of appeal you are filing
  • Name, contact information, and filing date
  • Date of the determination that was made by the Director of the San Francisco Department of Building Inspection
  • Property address, with number of units and guest rooms
  • Building permit, application, complaint, or notice-of-violation number
  • Nature of the determination being appealed and code section under which the determination was made
  • Basis for the appeal, including how the Director erred in their determination
  • Signature

2. Give us your application and payment

Include:

  • Appeal application
  • Payment - if using check, make it payable to the "San Francisco Department of Building Inspection" 

You can mail or drop off your package at our office.

Once we receive your appeal application and payment, we will contact you to request more detailed information and documentation.

Please note that Building Inspection Commission meetings take place on the third Wednesday of every month.
