Office of Transgender Initiatives denounces the Federal Administration’s cruel invitation for homeless shelters to discriminate against transgender people

Yesterday the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) proposed a new rule for federally-funded homeless shelters that would encourage shelters to deny admission to transgender people.

This new rule to invite homeless shelters to discriminate is as heartless as it is lawless. The Federal Administration can't change the fact that the Fair Housing Act continues to protect LGBTQ people from discrimination in housing.

Yet, this proposed rule will still cause serious harm by improperly sending the message to shelters that they can freely discriminate against transgender people. This is a cruel action as Black, Indigenous, and Latinx transgender community members face extraordinarily high rates of unemployment and homelessness. It is unconscionable to encourage shelters to discriminate to an already vulnerable population during a deadly global pandemic.

We are here to clarify to all shelters, and trans and gender nonconforming people in San Francisco that this proposed rule is illegal and will not stand. It's inhumane and illegal to turn someone away in need of a safe place to sleep simply because of who they are. We call on HUD to stop their ongoing attacks on trans communities.
