For Immediate Release

SAN FRANCISCO, Tuesday, August 27, 2024 –The Department of Elections is expanding its collaboration with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to support new citizens. During the naturalization ceremonies held at the San Francisco Field Office, the Department’s outreach team will help new citizens register to vote and provide them with essential information and resources for the November 5 election.

“Our partnership with USCIS at naturalization ceremonies is a vital component of our outreach strategy,” said Director John Arntz. “These ceremonies offer a valuable opportunity to engage with individuals who are eager to embrace their new role as voters. My team is committed to making the voter registration process as easy as possible and ensuring that every new citizen is well-informed and prepared to vote in the November 5 election.”

The Department’s outreach team will be attending USCIS naturalization ceremonies 1-2 days per week. During these ceremonies, hundreds of attendees will learn about their rights and responsibilities as U.S. citizens. After each ceremony, Department of Elections staff will engage with attendees to congratulate them, assist with completing voter registration forms, and provide information about voting in the upcoming election.

These naturalization ceremonies remain the Department’s most significant source of new voter registrations, demonstrating engagement and enthusiasm from new citizens. Recent feedback from attendees further highlights the impact of the Department’s outreach efforts:

  • “Voting is part of the reason I wanted to become a U.S. citizen.”
  • “I’ve been in this country for over 20 years, so registering to vote feels right.”
  • “I’m so excited! Thank you for helping me register to vote. Now my wife and I can vote together this November.”

In collaboration with its many outreach partners, the Department of Elections remains committed to promoting civic engagement and ensuring every eligible city resident has the opportunity to participate in the November 5 election.
