SAN FRANCISCO, Wednesday, August 16, 2023 – This week, the San Francisco Department of Elections has mailed notices to all local voters. These notices explain how each voter’s registered party preference will affect which contests will appear on their ballot for the March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election.
“The mailing of these notices marks the beginning of our presidential primary outreach program. This program is meant to ensure every voter gets a ballot listing their preferred presidential primary candidate in the March 2024 election,” said Director John Arntz. “In the coming weeks, I ask every local voter to take a moment to get ready for this election by confirming or updating the information in their voter record at sfelections.org/voterportal or by contacting our office.”
In the March 5, 2024, Presidential Primary Election, all ballots will list voter-nominated and nonpartisan contests, and state and local ballot measures. However, not all ballots will list party-nominated contests, which include the office of the U.S. President and membership in a party’s County Central Committee or County Council.
If a voter has registered to vote with a political party preference, they will automatically receive a ballot with all party-nominated contests for that party. To get a different ballot, they will need to re-register with a different party preference.
If a voter has registered to vote without a political party preference, they will receive a ballot without any party-nominated contests unless they take one of the following actions:
- Re-register with a party preference to receive a ballot with all party-nominated contests for that party.
- Request a ballot of a party allowing voters with no party preference to vote in their presidential contest (but not in their party County Central Committee/County Council, if any.) In October 2023, the Department will publish a list of those parties on its website and will include it in the notices that will be mailed to all local voters registered without a party preference.
Any local voter can check information in their registration record, including their party preference and address, at sfelections.org/voterportal or by calling the Department of Elections at (415) 554-4375.
