Department of Building Inspection Customer Communication

DBI Update – Storm Alert, Customer Survey, 1/1/24 Electronic Plan Review Transition, DBI Holiday Closures
December 19, 2023

Dear Customers,

The storm passing through is expected to intensify over the next couple of days with winds in San Francisco potentially reaching 40 mph or more. As such, we want to remind building owners to take some basic precautions and be mindful about the impact on your property.

Storm recommendations

  • Close and latch any operable windows.
  • Remove all loose or unsecured objects from balconies, roofs or other outside areas.
  • If you see any cracks or signs of distress around a window, contact building management to help secure the opening.
  • If construction work is happening at a building, scaffolding and construction equipment and materials should be secured on roofs and outside areas.
  • During a storm, if you see something that appears to be an emergency or could cause injury, call 911.
  • For all other building related issues, file a report at 311 and the Department of Building Inspection (DBI) will send an inspector to investigate.

Next, if you haven’t already taken it, we want to encourage you to complete our anonymous customer survey and share your thoughts about your experience working with DBI.
The ten-question survey should take less than five minutes of your time and will provide us with valuable insight on what’s working and what needs more attention at DBI. The survey closes on December 22, so please share your views today! Thank you!

We also want to remind you that DBI is transitioning to 100% electronic plan review (EPR) for In-House Review projects starting January 1, 2024. Here’s a link to an EPR resource page featuring useful information and you are also welcome to email us at SFplanreview@sfgov.org.

Last, DBI and the Permit Center will be closed December 25 and January 1 in observance of Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Thank you for your ongoing partnership and support.
