    The meeting of the Visual Arts Committee of the San Francisco Arts Commission scheduled for Wednesday, July 20, 2022, has been cancelled.

      The San Francisco Arts Commission acknowledges that we are on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone who are the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula. As the indigenous stewards of this land and in accordance with their traditions, the Ramaytush Ohlone have never ceded, lost nor forgotten their responsibilities as the caretakers of this place, as well as for all peoples who reside in their traditional territory. As guests, we recognize that we benefit from living and working on their traditional homeland. We wish to pay our respects by acknowledging the ancestors, elders and relatives of the Ramaytush Community and by affirming their sovereign rights as First Peoples. As a department dedicated to promoting a diverse and equitable Arts and Culture environment in San Francisco, we are committed to supporting the traditional and contemporary evolution of the American Indian community.

      Explanatory Documents: Items

      Presentation Time: Approximately 3 minutes

       

      1. Motion to approve Malcolm X, a mural design by Francisco Acquino. The mural will be installed on Star Market at 4400 3rd St. in District 10. The mural measures approximately 25 ft. by 40 ft. The project is funded by the San Francisco African American Arts and Cultural Center. The artwork will not become part of the Civic Art Collection.

         
      2. Motion to approve Fish Mural, a mural design by Hudson Lanier. The mural will be installed at Louis Sutter Roundhouse, in McLaren Park in District 10. The mural will be on three panels, measuring approximately 9 ft. 6 in. by 18 ft.; 9 ft. 6 in. by 11 ft.; and 9 ft. 6 in. by 7 ft. The project is funded by a Community Challenge Grant. The artwork will not become part of the Civic Art Collection.

       

    4. SFAC Galleries

      Presentation of the SFAC Galleries upcoming Fall 2022 Main Gallery exhibition. 

      Discussion and Possible Action: for the Director of Cultural Affairs to approve an artist honorarium in the amount of $9,000 to Stop Yelling Inc. for their participation in the fall 2022 SFAC Galleries Main Gallery exhibition (September 30-November 12, 2022).

       

    5. Mothers Building

      Presentation of potential reuse plans, update on landmarking status, and feasibility study for the Mother’s Building, located at the San Francisco Zoo.

    6. Union Square Temporary Sculpture

      Discussion and Possible Action

      Presentation of temporary sculpture proposal to be installed and on view in Union Square.



      Discussion and Possible Action: to approve the temporary installation of a 48’ tall sculpture by Marco Cochrane, titled R-Evolution, fabricated from steel rod and tubing with two layers of geodesic triangles and covered by stainless steel mesh, to be installed in Union Square at a date to be determined in early 2023 for a period of six months which is sponsored fully by the Union Square Association, pending final approval from the Recreation and Park Commission.

    7. Southeast Family Health Center Expansion

      Presentation of the completed artworks by Ramekon O’Arwisters, William Rhodes, and Ron Moultrie Saunders for the Southeast Family Health Center Expansion.

      Discussion and Possible action: to approve as installed the completed artwork titled Woven Calm, 2022, by Ramekon O’Arwisters for the Southeast Family Health Center Expansion. The artwork is installed in the Center’s main lobby and consists of a handwoven and crocheted fabric tapestry.

      Discussion and Possible action: to approve as installed the completed artwork titled Community History Quilts, 2022, by William Rhodes for the Southeast Family Health Center Expansion. The artwork is installed in the Center’s first floor corridor and consists of four fabric quilts with hand-painted images.

      Discussion and Possible action: to approve as installed the completed artworks titled African Origins: Green Acacia, 2022, and African Origins: Amaryllis Belladonna, 2022, by Ron Moultrie Saunders for the Southeast Family Health Center Expansion. The artworks are installed across from the Center’s second floor waiting rooms and consist of acid-etched glass panels with printed interlayers.

    8. Red Gothic Conservation and Reinstallation

    1. Agenda items will normally be heard in order. Please note, that on occasion a special circumstance may necessitate that an agenda item be taken out of order. To ensure that an agenda item is not missed, it is advised to arrive at the beginning of the meeting. All agenda changes will be announced by the Chair at the top of the meeting.
