About ADA Coordinator resources
As an ADA Coordinator, your goal is to ensure that your department complies with the state disability laws and the federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). ODA, the City’s overall ADA Coordinator, is always available to provide the guidance and tools you need to get your job done.
Department information and representation:
- Update your department about relevant legal and policy developments.
- Answer questions from department staff.
- Represent the department in citywide ADA functions.
City building, program, and communication access:
- Ensure equal access to all City facilities, services, programs, and activities.
- Develop access plans for the construction and maintenance of City-owned buildings.
- Track physical access issues that may need capital improvement budget requests and recommend the improvements.
- Identify programmatic barriers that need policy or program modifications.
- Ensure that program materials are available in alternative formats and videos have captions.
- Make sign language interpreting and live captioning available for meetings and events.
Public grievance resolution:
- Respond to public complaints and information requests.
- Track requests for reasonable modifications.
- Develop and coordinate accessibility solutions with ODA.
Accessibility considerations for contracts:
- Include disability access obligations in Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and contract language.
- Train the RFP Evaluation Committee (or subcommittee) to evaluate programmatic accessibility.
- Develop assessment tools to track programmatic access in ongoing contracts.
- Facilitate training for contract agencies, as needed.
- Track grievance procedures in contract agencies.
