About the Accountant Intern Program

About the internship

The Accountant Intern Program is an 18 month, paid internship. Interns complete two 9 month rotations at an average of 2 different departments. 

During each rotation, you'll have experienced mentors throughout the City train you. You'll also attend workshops that teach you about our purchasing and accounting procedures.

The program is your entry point for the City's Accountant series.

How to join

Apply online

To apply for an accounting internship, you must have:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
  • 18 semester units or 24 quarter units of coursework in accounting

If you meet these requirements, apply online and submit any relevant transcript(s) for verification.

Take an exam

After we review your application, we'll invite you to take an exam. The exam will test your:

  • Knowledge of accounting principles and practices (including governmental accounting)
  • Abilities in math, writing, and data analysis

We recommended that you take a governmental accounting course before taking the exam.

Taking the written exam does not guarantee you will advance to the next phase of selection.

Complete an interview

If you pass the written exam, we'll invite you for an oral interview with our Program Steering Committee.

They will decide whether to accept you into the program based on your performance.

Completing your internship

After you complete two 9 month rotations, we'll send you an official notice of completion.

You may then compete for a permanent position as a senior accountant. 

This program is endorsed by the International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, Local 21, AFL-CIO, the bargaining unit representing the accounting classifications.
