February 24, 2021 IRC Executive Committee meeting

Vice Chair Paz called the meeting to order at 5:40 p.m.

Present: Chair Kennelly (5:45 p.m.), Vice Chair Paz, Commissioner Rahimi.

Not Present: Commissioner Khojasteh.

a. Approval of January 27, 2021 Executive Committee Meeting Minutes

This item was heard out of order due to lack of quorum. Chair Kennelly motioned to approve the minutes from January 27, 2021. Commissioner Rahimi seconded the motion. The minutes were approved unanimously.

a. Follow Up Actions from Special January 2021 Immigration Hearing

During its January meeting, the Executive Committee assigned Commissioner Khojasteh to research arrests in the Tenderloin neighborhood as a follow-up to the special hearing. The Commission also endorsed Cities for Action’s Vision for Immigration Action. Director Pon noted that Commission Clerk Shore has tracked and analyzed proposed legislation, and the Commission can invite the Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) to present policy updates at its next meeting.



b. Follow Up Actions from IRC Strategic Planning Retreat

As a follow-up to the Commission’s strategic planning retreat, Commissioner Monge will lead the Commission’s language access efforts. Commissioner Rahimi volunteered to assist him. Vice Chair Paz asked for an update from the Economic Recovery Task Force. Director Pon can invite USCIS and City Administrator Chu to the next Commission meeting.

a. Director’s Updates

Director Pon provided a brief overview of OCEIA’s work and noted that the Immigrant Rights Commission can participate in the Board of Supervisors’ upcoming language access hearing. Deputy Director Whipple provided an update on the Community Ambassadors Program and an overview of OCEIA’s virtual DACA and naturalization workshops. The DreamSF fellowship program is now accepting applications. Vice Chair Paz discussed holding a hearing on anti-Asian violence in partnership with the Human Rights Commission or the Office of Racial Equity. Director Pon can reach out to the Human Rights Commission.
