      Chair Almanza               15 min

The Committee will again discuss the draft revision to the existing Committee bylaws. Many of the changes merely reflect the creation of the Homelessness Oversight Commission. These were voted on and approved by the Policy Subcommittee at its April 9, 2023 meeting, with the understanding that the section highlighted in yellow will be revisited once the City Attorney responds to the Committee’s request for advice (on the issue of avoiding potential conflicts of interest during site inspections). Said advice is expected to be received on May 11, 2023.

      B.  LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT           Discussion/Action

                                                         Chair Almanza    12 min

In March, Member Eya suggested the Committee should read a “land acknowledgement” like the one the Department of Public Health uses at the start of its meetings.  The Policy Subcommittee proposes:

The Shelter Monitoring Committee acknowledges that we are on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone who are the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula. As the Indigenous stewards of this land, and in accordance with their traditions, the Ramaytush Ohlone have never ceded, lost, nor forgotten their responsibilities as the caretakers of this place, as well as for all peoples who reside in their traditional territory. As guests, we recognize that we benefit from living and working on their traditional homeland. We wish to pay our respects by acknowledging the Ancestors, Elders, and Relatives of the Ramaytush Ohlone community and by affirming their sovereign rights as First Peoples.

Public Comment will be heard before any action.

Proposed Action: Shall the above variation on the Land Acknowledgement used by DPH be read at the start of in-person SMC meetings?
