Crimes on Muni

Monthly Muni crimes per 100,000 vehicle miles.

Measure description

The rate of crimes related to Muni for every 100,000 miles of service is an indicator of the security throughout the Muni system. It is a key performance measure for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA)’s strategic objective to improve security for transportation system users. Crimes on Muni is a Citywide trend indicator.

Why this measure is important

Reporting on monthly Crimes on Muni provides the public, elected officials, and City staff with a current snapshot of the level of security throughout the Muni system. This metric enables SFMTA to apply data-driven police deployment to high-crime Muni lines, targeting enforcement where it is most needed.

Lowering the monthly Muni crimes per 100,000 vehicle miles may also incentivize San Franciscans to utilize buses and rail lines during their daily commute, which furthers SFMTA’s Climate Action Plan goal of having at least 80% of all San Francisco trips be low-carbon trips by 2030.

This measure shows the rate of crimes related to Muni for every 100,000 miles of Muni service. Its purpose is to improve security throughout the Muni system by identifying criminal activity and applying data-driven police deployment to high-crime Muni lines, with targeted enforcement where it is most needed. It is a key performance indicator for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA)’s strategic objective to improve security for transportation system users.

Chart description

  • Y-axis: Muni-related crimes per 100,000 vehicle miles
  • X-axis: Calendar years

Since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the reported crime rate on MUNI has been staying generally below the target rate of 2.7 per 100,000 vehicle miles.

How performance is measured

Monthly Muni crimes per 100,000 vehicle miles is calculated using the following methodology

Number of Muni crimes committed in the month divided by the total number of Muni miles traveled and then multiplied by 100,000.

This measure includes crimes reported to the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD). Beginning in January 2013, SFMTA expanded the definition of Muni-related incidents to include those that occurred off Muni vehicles. Reported results are subject to change as data quality improves or new data become available.

The number displayed on the scorecard page represents a fiscal year average of the values in the chart above.

Data

Muni Crimes per 100,000 data come from SFMTA’s Performance Portal. Crimes on Muni data are reported with a two-month lag. For example, May’s data will be available at the end of July.
