Measure description
This is a demand measure that tracks the number of physical books/materials and eBooks/eMedia checked out at San Francisco Public Libraries. Library circulation represents the number of physical and electronic library materials used by the public each month.
Why this measure is important
Tracking library circulation is crucial for understanding patron needs, optimizing resource allocation, and demonstrating the library's value to stakeholders. It also helps in improving services, securing funding, and informing strategic planning.
Library total monthly and annual circulation
Library circulation represents the number of physical and electronic library materials used by the public each month. This includes:
- San Francisco's Main Library
- Branch libraries
- Bookmobiles
- Jail and reentry services
- The Juvenile Justice Center
- Interlibrary loan
- Electronic print, audio and visual materials downloaded or streamed through the library’s website
The chart’s legend is below:
- Y-axis: Total materials circulated
- X-axis: Calendar year
How performance is measured
Circulation statistics are generated from the Library’s automated circulation system. Reports are generated on a monthly basis.
SF Public Library projects monthly target ranges using pre-COVID historical data to account for seasonality and predictable rates of change in service provision. The number displayed on the scorecard page is the total number of physical and eMedia materials circulated in the latest month for which data are available.
