Health insurance coverage represents the percent of San Francisco residents who have public or private health insurance. Access to health care and insurance coverage is an important indicator of the overall well-being of the residents of San Francisco. Statistics on health insurance status are important for guiding insurance enrollment outreach activities, and also provide public health agencies with the ability to plan for current and future health care needs.
Healthy People 2020 is a national, 10-year agenda that provides a framework for improving the health of all Americans. It is a population-health focused program that includes a set of Leading Health Indicators to measure the overall health of the population.

How Performance is Measured
This measure uses data reported by the American Community Survey (ACS) one-year estimates. The ACS is an ongoing survey conducted through the U.S. Census Bureau. Information on the rate of participation in San Francisco’s health coverage programs is reported through the Department of Public Health's Community Health Assessment. The Community Health Assessment is administered by the department's Population Health Division.
