Measure Description
The percentage of San Francisco residents with health insurance represents the percent of San Francisco residents who have public or private health insurance.
Information on the rate of participation in San Francisco’s health coverage programs is reported through the Department of Public Health's (DPH) Community Health Assessment. The Community Health Assessment is administered by the department's Population Health Division.
Health coverage is an important population health indicator. DPH strives to have at least 97% of the City's residents with health insurance.
Why this Measure is Important
Access to health care and insurance coverage is an important indicator of the overall well-being of the residents of San Francisco. Statistics on health insurance status are important for guiding insurance enrollment outreach activities, and also provide public health agencies with the ability to plan for current and future health care needs.

How Performance is Measured
This measure uses data reported by the American Community Survey (ACS) one-year estimates. The ACS is an ongoing survey conducted through the U.S. Census Bureau. Information on the rate of participation in San Francisco’s health coverage programs is reported through the Department of Public Health's Community Health Assessment. The Community Health Assessment is administered by the department's Population Health Division.

Data lag time: The American Communities Survey data are typically updated in September every year and reflect the previous calendar year. That is, 2024 data will be not available until the Fall of 2025.
