Taking public transit during COVID-19

Lower the risk of COVID-19 when you take buses, trains, and other public transit in the Bay Area.

Riding on transit is just as safe as being indoors in other public places in San Francisco! Here are steps you can take to best protect yourself and others while on public transportation.

Wear a mask

Masks are still recommended, but not required, on public transit and in stations. Masking is an especially good way to protect you against COVID-19 infection. Masks are still helpful even if others are not wearing masks. Read about which types of masks are best.

Some transit agencies may require mask-wearing. Make sure that you follow agency requirements. Always bring a mask with you in case you need it.

Be up-to-date on vaccination

Get vaccinated as soon as you can, and get boosted as soon as you are eligible.SFMTA provides free transportation to COVID-19 vaccination appointments.

Stay home if you have COVID-19

Stay home if you are sick and get tested. If you know you’ve been exposed to COVID-19, you should get tested and wear a mask.

Know when you should be more careful

Stay up to date on how much COVID is in our community. You can sign up for CA Notify so you can find out if you were exposed to COVID-19.

People who are at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19 should wear a better quality mask and may consider avoiding peak travel times.

Increase your protection

You can also:

  • Open windows in the transit vehicle whenever possible.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water before you leave, and when you arrive. Do not touch your eyes, nose, or mouth until you’ve washed your hands. If you do not have soap and water, use hand sanitizer.
