San Francisco, CA – Today Mayor London N. Breed announced that leadership of SEIU Local 87 and the San Francisco Maintenance Contractors Association reached a new contract agreement, avoiding a strike that would have caused major disruptions and created hardship for San Francisco’s workers. Local 87 represents over 5,000 janitors and the San Francisco Maintenance Contractors Association represents janitorial services throughout San Francisco, including major commercial buildings.
With the existing contract set to expire on July 31, Mayor Breed brought together the parties in City Hall for talks starting on Tuesday July 30. Local 87 had authorized a strike if the two parties could not come to an agreement. Over the last week, along with representation from the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, the two parties worked collaboratively at City Hall, including through the night. On Friday night, the two parties agreed to new contract that extends through July 31, 2028.
“I want to thank all the parties for working collaboratively through the night to reach a solution that avoids a strike and gives our hard-working janitors the support and recognition they deserve for the difficult and important work they do every day,” said Mayor London Breed. “I’m grateful for everyone who stepped up to get this done, including Olga Miranda and the leadership of Local 87 and the San Francisco Maintenance Contractors Association. I also want to recognize the Federal Meditator Rachel Lev for her work. I want to thank my Chief of Staff Sean Elsbernd, our Director of Human Resources Carol Isen, and Steve Kawa, all of whom helped throughout the week to keep this conversation moving in the right direction. This agreement is a major win for San Francisco and for our working people. It not only avoids what would have been a very difficult strike, but it shows that we can come together to work towards solutions that truly benefit our entire City.”
