San Francisco, CA — The City Performance division of the Controller's Office launched a new website on Vision Zero Benchmarking. Vision Zero is the collaborative, citywide effort to end traffic fatalities in San Francisco. The City and County of San Francisco adopted Vision Zero as a policy in 2014, declaring that no one should die while traveling on city streets. Sustained Vision Zero efforts can help move cities towards fewer fatalities and injuries. The goal of this benchmarking effort is to provide context to San Francisco’s work and progress on key Vision Zero metrics alongside its peers. City Performance collaborated with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the San Francisco Police Department, and other stakeholders on this project.
“The Controller’s Office has supported the City’s Vision Zero efforts for many years. We are pleased to provide this new interactive tool for the public and policy makers to understand how San Francisco is performing in the context of its peer cities. Vision Zero is an incredibly important goal for the City,” said Controller Greg Wagner. “There is still more work to be done.”
For Vision Zero Benchmarking, City Performance presents San Francisco in context to 12 peer cities across the United States. The peer cities include: Boston, Chicago, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New York, Oakland, Portland, San José, Seattle, and Washington D.C. City Performance selected cities based on similarity in population size and density, prioritizing cities in California and major cities in other geographic regions across the U.S. Not every city had available data for every measure.
The benchmarking effort considered seven metrics demonstrating progress on key Vision Zero indicators or efforts, which include:
- Annual Public Transit Trips
- Commute Methods
- Fatalities
- Injuries
- Separated Bike Lanes
- Street Network Speeds
- Traffic Citations
Each metric includes a dashboard or visual and text explaining the key takeaways. The text for each dashboard also discusses the data sources and any limitations.
