The Department of Elections Releases Preliminary Results Report #9 and Update on the Number of Ballots Left to Count for the March 5, 2024, Consolidated Presidential Primary Election

SAN FRANCISCO, Tuesday, March 12, 2024 – Today, the Department of Elections issued the ninth preliminary election results reports of votes cast in the March 5, 2024, Consolidated Presidential Primary Election.

Today’s preliminary results report includes 2,488 vote-by-mail ballots and 306 provisional ballots counted since the previous results report issued yesterday.  Today’s preliminary results report includes votes from approximately 5,588 ballot cards since the ballot is comprised of two cards.   

The Department must still process and count approximately 6,700 ballots. This estimate includes: 

Vote-by-mail ballots (received by mail, at drop boxes, and at polling places): 600

Provisional ballots (cast at polling places and the City Hall Voting Center): 6,100

The Department received nearly 500 vote-by-mail ballots that voters delivered to other California counties and which have been added to the total number of ballots remaining to process. 

Department personnel will process ballots until 5 p.m. today. 

Ballot processing will occur from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during weekdays and is open to public observation in-person and via livestream at sfelections.org/observe

When the Department issues preliminary results reports, Director John Arntz will be available to respond to questions from members of the public and the media outside of Room 48 in City Hall.
