SAN FRANCISCO, Thursday, February 15, 2024 – To receive a ballot in the mail for the March 5, 2024, Consolidated Presidential Primary Election, new voters must be registered by Tuesday, February 20, 2024.

To register to vote, a person must be 1) a United States citizen and a resident of California; 2) at least 18 years old on Election Day; 3) not currently found mentally incompetent to vote by a court; and 4) not currently serving a state or federal prison term for conviction of a felony. Local voters can confirm their registration information by contacting the Department or by visiting sfelections.org/voterportal

“I encourage every eligible San Franciscan to take a few minutes to make sure they are registered to vote and their registration is up to date. Everyone registered by February 20 will receive a ballot packet in the mail. After that, eligible San Franciscan can still register and vote in person at the City Hall Voting Center or at a neighborhood polling place,” said Director John Arntz. “Any eligible 16 and 17 year olds can also pre-register to vote now and we will automatically activate their registration once they turn 18.”

San Franciscans can register, pre-register, or update their voter registration records (for example, update a residential or mailing address or change party preference) at registertovote.ca.gov  or by returning a paper registration form. To receive a mail ballot for the March 5 election, a person must complete their registration online no later than midnight of February 20; mailed paper registration forms must be postmarked on or before February 20.

After February 20, eligible residents can register or update their registration at the City Hall Voting Center or a polling place up through Election Day.

Information about registering under special circumstances, including as a college student, while experiencing homelessness, or while involved in the criminal justice system, is available at sfelections.org/registration.
