Due to low case numbers, this page will no longer include cases after 12/31/2022.
Age group
The following shows the age distribution among mpox cases in San Francisco.
Race or ethnicity
We track mpox cases by race or ethnicity to learn who the virus has affected. The following shows the distribution of race or ethnicity among mpox cases.
Gender
Sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) have been a focus during the most recent mpox outbreak. But anyone who has been in close, personal contact with someone who has mpox is at risk of infection.
The following shows the reported gender among mpox cases.
Sexual orientation
We also track San Francisco mpox cases by their reported sexual orientation.
Sexual contact
Mpox spreads through prolonged skin to skin contact. Contact includes sex, kissing, breathing at close range, or sharing bedding and clothing.
We track whether mpox cases had sexual contact during the 21 days prior to symptom(s) onset. This timeframe is the incubation period.
Data limitations
Case summary data may not be immediately available for recently reported cases. Data will update as more information becomes available.
To protect privacy, we summarize mpox data by one response category at a time. We then suppress data when cumulative counts are between 1-4. We do not suppress data for the response option "Unknown". This response option does not provide identifying information. If only one response option has a count <5, we also suppress the second lowest response option. When a suppressed response option reaches a count of 5 or more, it is no longer suppressed.
These data may undercount certain minorities. Residents who face stigma or discrimination in medical settings may not want to share some information. For example, stigma could result in a patient not sharing their gender identity. There are health inequities and barriers to healthcare for non-cisgender and non-heterosexual people.
The spread and severity of mpox is complex. It has affected residents based on overlapping layers of structural inequities. This means that there may be intersections of populations who are particularly affected. For this reason, you should interpret these data in context. Individual conclusions should be treated with caution.
