Apply for a building permit

Building permits for new construction, additions, alterations, or repairs.

What to do

The Permit Center at 1660 Mission is closed. We are working remotely to review submittals.

Wait times are longer as we are transitioning from a paper to an electronic workflow.

If you need to submit a Form 4/7, Form 5, or Form 6, follow these instructions to build a sign, demolish a building, or excavate.

1. Check what you need to apply for a building permit

You will need property and construction details to fill out our building permit application. Review everything you need.

2. Prepare your plans

If your permit requires architectural plans, follow all of our rules to create PDFs of your plans or addenda.

PDFs must be editable. Do not submit locked, password-protected, encrypted, or “restricted” documents.

Each upload must be less than 350MB. You may upload multiple documents.

Title blocks must have your project address, sheet count, and sheet name.

Every sheet must have your signature and stamp. Use a scanned graphic signature with a PDF stamp.

You must upload all required documents and your complete plan set. It takes longer to process incomplete plans or applications without supporting documents.

3. Apply for your permit

To apply for a building permit, we will ask you about:

  • Your project team
  • The location or existing building information
  • Your project plan
  • Construction details

You will also need to upload your plans and agree to our legal terms.

We will email you a copy of your submission.

4. Pay your permit fees

Permit fees are 6 to 9% of building costs. You will pay the first half when your application is accepted. You will then pay your remaining fees when we issue the permit.

We will email you your fee invoice and instructions on how to pay.

5. Make changes

Plans for construction must meet City requirements that keep buildings safe and neighborhoods livable. We might ask you to make changes to your plans before we can approve your permit.

6. Pay remaining fees and get permit

Once your permit is approved, we will email you your second fee invoice covering the balance and instructions on how to pay.

After we have received your final payment, we will email you your approved permit and job card.
