Performance Results on San Francisco’s Public Services Released, Along with Interactive Dashboard Showcasing the State of Public Parks for Residents

Reports summarize the delivery of resident services in San Francisco between July 2023 and June 2024, showing both positive trends and areas for improvement.

San Francisco, CA — The Controller’s Office has released two annual reports that are part of the City’s core work to measure the performance and delivery of local government services: San Francisco's Annual Performance Results for Fiscal Year 2024 and the Annual Park Maintenance Standards Key Findings Report

The Annual Performance Report provides a summary of the more than 750 performance measures that speak to the effectiveness and efficiency of departments' major goals and activities in eight service areas: Streets, Parks & Libraries; Public Health; Transit & Street Safety; Homelessness Response System; Public Safety; Safety Net Services; Sustainability & Climate Action; and Economy & Finance. Ultimately, this analysis of how each City department performed over the last year — based on targets that were set — helps City leadership make decisions about how to deliver services for taxpayers.

“Good data informs good policy. We aim to provide something that’s a useful snapshot of our city’s service delivery performance — something to supplement the narratives that don’t always capture a complete picture of complicated issues,” said Controller Greg Wagner. “Departments can hopefully see at a glance what’s working well and where there’s more work to be done.” 

Similarly, the Park Maintenance Annual Report and interactive dashboards are a reflection of key services delivered by the City’s Recreation and Parks Department. Every three months, staff from the Controller’s Office and the Recreation and Parks Department visit parks across San Francisco to conduct evaluations which the Controller’s Office then analyzes and aggregates as part of our public reporting. These tools serve to support Recreation and Park’s operational decision-making, with the ultimate goal of continuous improvement of San Francisco’s parks. The dashboards were built with residents in mind, detailing the conditions of public park features from dog play areas and athletic fields to restrooms and table seating areas. 

Three new parks in the Mission Bay neighborhood were added to San Francisco’s park system and were evaluated for the first time in fiscal year 2024: Mission Creek Park (scoring 93%), Mission Bay Park (scoring 97%), and Mariposa Park (scoring 94%).  San Francisco’s public parks are consistently rated among the best in the United States. In 2017, San Francisco became the first city in the nation where all residents live within a 10-minute walk of a park.  

 

About the City of San Francisco’s Performance Program 

The Performance Program is an initiative of the San Francisco Controller's Office. San Francisco voters approved Proposition C in November 2003, which mandated that the Controller's Office monitor the level and effectiveness of public services provided by the City and County of San Francisco. As part of the mandate, the program reports annual performance metrics for every department in the City. 

The Annual Report Online Viewer is a tool that visualizes departmental performance data. The viewer includes an interactive line graph comparing departments' targets to their year-end data, a measure description section that describes the measure, and a table that presents historical targets and results.
