For Immediate Release

SAN FRANCISCO, Thursday, August 15, 2024 – In an effort to boost voter registration and participation, the Department of Elections will distribute over 300,000 quadrilingual notices to every household in San Francisco next week. This citywide mailer aims to reach both current registrants and eligible but unregistered residents, providing essential information on how to engage in the upcoming election.

The mailer will feature the Department’s outreach theme: “One city, many voices. Cast your ballot, make your choices!” This message is not just a call to action but a tribute to the essential role of voting and a celebration of the diverse voices within our city. By showcasing this theme, the mailer aims to foster a sense of unity and civic responsibility, encouraging every resident to participate actively in shaping the future of our community.

“We are committed to ensuring that all residents are informed, ready, and empowered to participate in the November 5 election,” said Director John Arntz. “This comprehensive mailer is designed to remind people of the steps they need to take before ballots are mailed and the voting period begins in early October. We hope our outreach theme resonates with all San Franciscans and inspires them to engage in the electoral process.”

The mailer will outline six essential steps for voters to be well-prepared for the upcoming election:

  1. Register to Vote: Visit registertovote.ca.gov to register or update your voter record. For a paper form, call (415) 554-4375.
  2. Check Your Address: Ensure your ballot and voting materials are mailed to your current address by visiting sfelections.gov/voterportal.
  3. Decide How You Will Vote: With over forty contests on the November 5 ballot, start researching candidates and measures early. Non-partisan state and local voter guides will be mailed in early October.
  4. Reduce Paper Use: The local voter guide will be over 250 pages long. Opt out of mail delivery to read the online version or share a copy with others in your household by visiting sfelections.gov/gopaperless.
  5. Practice Marking a Ranked-Choice Voting Contest: Use our interactive ballot to familiarize yourself with ranked-choice voting at sfelections.gov/practice.
  6. Vote by November 5: All voting options are secure and accessible. Vote by mail or in person at the City Hall Voting Center starting October 7, or at your neighborhood polling place on Election Day.

In addition to this guidance, the mailer will underscore the Department’s role as a reliable and trusted source for election information and will encourage residents to consider serving as poll workers, highlighting the opportunity to contribute to the community. Those interested can apply by visiting sfelections.gov/pwa. Additionally, the mailer will inform readers about the eligibility for non-citizen voting in the upcoming Board of Education Election, with details available at sfelections.gov/ncv.
