For Immediate Release

SAN FRANCISCO, Thursday, January 25, 2024 – This Tuesday, January 30, our country will celebrate Help America Vote Day. Help America Vote Day was established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission in 2022 to encourage more people to get involved in the electoral process by serving as poll workers. Poll workers continue to be an essential part of elections, protecting voter rights by ensuring operations at in-person voting sites are safe, consistent, and fair.

“Full service in-person voting would not be possible in San Francisco without the dedication of the many poll workers who help us serve voters in every election,” said Director John Arntz. “Poll workers not only help their neighbors understand their voting options and cast their ballots, but also protect voter rights by posting official notices, safeguarding election materials, and maintaining polling places in which all voters can cast their ballots privately and independently. Today, on behalf of local voters, I want to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all former, current, and future poll workers!”

For every Election Day, the Department recruits approximately 2,000 poll workers to assist local voters at approximately 500 neighborhood polling places. Both those who have served as poll workers before as well as new recruits receive comprehensive training and materials to make sure they are prepared to properly assist voters. For their service, poll workers receive a stipend of up to $295, depending on their particular assignment. To become a poll worker in San Francisco, you must be 1) a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident and 2) either at least 18 years old, or a high school student in good standing who is at least 16 years old. (High school poll workers must also have a parental permission to serve.)
