Every few weeks we will spotlight one of our commissioner/board members so you have an opportunity to get to know the Sheriff's Department Oversight Board board members.
This week we spotlight Member Dion-Jay Brookter.
Tell us a little about yourself:
Dion-Jay (“DJ”) Brookter is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Young Community Developers Inc. (YCD). YCD is a 501(c) (3) non-profit community-based organization who provides workforce development, education, and housing services to San Francisco’s underserved (Bayview/Hunters Point) community residents. In 2023, YCD served over 2,000 customers and secured placement for more than 500 program participants across several industry sectors. Mr. Brookter holds a B.S. in Speech Communication (Utah State Univ.) and an MBA from the Univ. of Phoenix.
Why did you want to become a commissioner/board member?
I wanted to join the oversight board because of my current work/lived experience of looking at the intersection between the justice system and our most underrepresented communities of color which I am a product of. Making sure that there is a community voice on this board is vital to its success in making impactful change.
What do you want to accomplish as a commissioner/board member?
During my time on the oversight board, I hope to build a stronger bridge between communities, programs for those who are justice involved and those who are providing oversight of those in custody.
And finally, since this is social media, a fun fact question: you have to sing karaoke, what song do you pick?
My go to karaoke song has to be Notorious BIG, “Juicy” cause it was all a dream!
